Sealants
Dental sealants are safe, effective, painless, long lasting, cost effective and
they play an important role in helping to prevent tooth decay ("cavities"). Sealants
are a plastic coating bonded into the grooves of the back teeth. After the sealant
is placed, the tooth becomes very smooth and is less likely to trap food and plaque
and becomes much easier to clean with your toothbrush. The enamel of a young permanent
tooth is still maturing for 3 years after it erupts, making the tooth very susceptible
to decay, therefore sealants are especially recommended for children who have their
permanent molars to protect the adult teeth from decay and fillings that essentially
weaken the overall tooth structure.
