Now that you have finished with dental implant surgery, the next step is to have a smooth recovery. This is an important part of the process, as your jawbone will start to grow around the post that was inserted. Following your dentist’s post-op instructions will help facilitate this, but you should avoid certain foods as well! Here are five that you should steer clear of after your procedure.
1.) Tough Meats
One of your favorite foods may be steak or pork because of how tasty they can be once prepared. However, they are tough cuts of meat. These and other parts will need to be worked on for a bit before you can swallow them. The excess chewing can lead to discomfort or soreness, so tenderize them, cut them into thin slices, or choose another part to enjoy!
2.) Crunchy Snacks
Chips or nuts are simple snacks you may enjoy throughout the day. However, their satisfying crunch can pack a punch to the implant site. The bite force needed puts pressure on your replacement, leading to irritation. Not only that, but they may break into sharp pieces, which can damage your gums. It’s best to avoid them and stick to softer things like bananas or ripe peaches.
3.) Sticky Candy
Caramel, taffy, and gummies are popular sweets that people love, but they get stuck in your teeth easily. They can trap bacteria against your smile while also pulling at your implant! This can lead to failure over time or infection as well.
4.) Spicy Foods
Many people love to add some spice to their food, but you may want to keep it mild or mellow. Hot peppers and other similar things can make your tender gums inflamed. You may notice more swelling or irritation, causing discomfort during your recovery.
5.) Hot Options
In general, you should also make sure your meals aren’t too hot. Aside from the occasional burn, you are also increasing blood flow in your mouth because of the heat. This can make you bleed or swell more. Instead, keep traditionally steaming options lukewarm or allow them to cool down.
It takes several months for your bone tissue to grow around your dental implant. While you can slowly start to introduce these items back into your diet, be sure to listen to your body. If you have any discomfort, then keep them off your plate for a while longer. Be patient, and then you’ll be able to enjoy them in no time with a full smile you love.
